If you are still under the impression that you can get through the UKCAT by mugging up the pages of your books then it is high time that you come out of the misconception. A lot of students might think that no matter how difficult this particular examination may be, they can crack it by endlessly memorising the chapters of the books. Students harbouring such a misconception must be aware of the fact that it is a grave error that they are committing. The UKCAT exam is not one that requires one to have only an in-depth knowledge of the subjects; instead its actual purpose is to test the aptitude skill of the candidate aspiring to become a medical practitioner. Experts frame the UKCAT questions in such a way that it will be able to assess the candidate’s innate skills. This is the reason why the examination is often referred to as a unique one. The Consortium conducting the test has divided the question paper into four sections namely Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Decision Analysis. On seeing the question paper acutely, one will be able to understand that the UKCAT course is not just restricted to any particular stream of subjects. Candidates from every background can sit for the test. Aptitude skill is something that is common to all. All you need for solving the paper is a sharp mind and the power to assess things fast and correct.

The standard time for the test is ninety three minutes which is just over one and half hours. While section 1 comprises of 44 questions which requires the candidate to solve it in 22 minutes, section 2 has 36 questions which gives a time limit of 23 minutes. Section 3 which is the Abstract Reasoning section has the maximum number of questions i.e. 65 but only 16 minutes. As for section 4 it has 26 questions allowing the candidate to solve it in 40 minutes. Once you start answering the test, make sure that you utilise every minute crucially. Once you move on to the next section, there is no coming back to the previous section. In order to get a first hand idea of the UKCAT format, candidates can resort to the UKCAT sample questions.

With the UKCAT 2011 not much far away, candidates are pouring in all their efforts for the preparation. As they delve themselves deeper into the UKCAT preparation which includes solving endless number of questions; they come across several queries and problems. It often happens that facing problems during the practice session assumes the shape of a ritual. Not everyone faces the same problem. Queries and problems vary from one to another. While some may face difficulty in the Abstract Reasoning section, other may find the Decision Analysis section quite tough to answer. The UKCAT exam paper is basically divided into four parts- Verbal Ability, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Decision Analysis. UKCAT Verbal Ability which is the first section has 44 questions, requiring the student to solve the section within a time limit of 22 minutes except for candidates with special needs who are allotted 28 minutes. Therefore, the candidate has to keep it in mind that he/she cannot afford to spend more than 2 minutes for each question. Remember, the whole purpose of this particular examination is not just limited to testing your skills. It is about testing your aptitude level. Hence, you must never forget that cracking the UKCAT will not be possible only with the help of your subject knowledge. You should also be equipped with a sharp and fast mind which is something that one must certainly possess if he/she is aspiring to become a doctor.
Candidates who find section 1 difficult to answer should stop fretting over the issue; instead follow some simple tips that will surely help them in solving the paper with ease. The section comprises of passages based on which questions are framed. Every question has three options which are common to every question in the whole section. Students often tend to confuse as to which is the right option – true, false and can’t tell. The options look simple yet are quite confusing, nonetheless impossible to answer. The candidate should read every single line of the passage with equal patience. If you are able to ensure this, half the battle is won. Read the question carefully. You will only choose the option ‘true’ if the statement can be justified from the passage. If any slight note of ambiguity prevails, go for the ‘can’t tell’ option. Remember, you will only tick the answer as ‘false’ when you can infer it from the excerpt that the statement has been refuted or there is something that is completely the opposite to what has been put in the question.

It is not a very uncommon mistake on the part of candidates to forget taking along with them the necessary documents to the test center. One cannot really blame the candidates either; what with the tension of the imminent exam and the anxiety to reach the venue in time, you are likely to overlook quite a few things. Sadly though, forgetting to take the identification requirements and other necessary documents along with you to the center might cost a great deal. UKCAT regulations are very strict in such matters, and omissions such as these will only ensure that you are not allowed to sit for the test. Moreover, your test fee is also going to be forfeited, which means that you will have to sit the test on a separate day; which in turn means that you have to undergo yet once more the hassle of registration and a repeated payment.

To be safe and ensure that you do not forget to take along with you the necessary documents to the test center, it would be best to keep them all arranged and stacked the night before the test. This way, there would not be any chances of missing out on anything that might cost you your appearance in the test.

On the day of the UKCAT, do not forget to take with you a photographic identification. Remember that the validity of photo identification documents will vary from place to place, so please check for the same with the authorities in the region where you will be sitting the UKCAT. For an examination center in the UK or any other country in the EU, the officials will accept a government-issued ID card, a driving license or a current original passport that bears your signature. Candidates from Middle-Eastern countries will have to bring their original, signed passport, while those from the US or Canada will require a passport or a driving license. No other documents than these will suffice as adequate identity proof.

Do take with you a document that will have exactly the same name and date of birth as the ones you have provided at the time of registration for the UKCAT. In case that particular document doesn’t match the information provided during registration, you must take with you an additional document that will testify the change of name. This additional document also needs to be legal to be considered as an appropriate proof of identity by the officials at the test center.

In case you feel that the name on your registration and ID proof does not match or that your documents will not suffice, contact the Pearson Vue office immediately. You must notify them of the situation at least 5 working days before the day of the test.

UKCAT Quantitative Reasoning is the second segment of the UKCAT paper. As the name of the segment itself suggests, it requires considerable aptitude on the part of the candidate regarding numbers. Needless to say, not all of you will be unanimous in your opinions regarding this section. While for some of you this might turn to be the easiest part in the entire UKCAT, others might get butterflies the size of dinosaurs just contemplating attempting it. And for good reason too, since numbers are often personal monsters for many of us.

However, do take heart. Remember that no matter how tough solving numerical problems might be, it is nothing that a good deal of practice can’t solve. In fact, as far as UKCAT is concerned, it is by far the easiest section. At least, it comes with the added advantage of being eminently practice-able; for this section, if not for any other, you can practice to your heart’s content.

On the other hand, do remember that not all of the questions in the UKCAT Quantitative Reasoning Subtest will have much to do with your numerical abilities. Like the other sections in the test, it will test your ability to nail the relevant information from the info-tank that will be presented to you. After all, this section has been designed to test not your numerical skills, but your ability to solve problems based completely on whatever information you have been provided.

However, you must be well acquainted with the simple numerical problems like calculation of ratios and percentages. This should not be a problem for many of you, given that all of you have had to solve such questions back in school. And if the prospect of facing those dreaded sums again is scary, you can always go about familiarizing yourself yet once more by opining those old copies.

The only way of nailing the UKCAT Quantitative Reasoning subtest is ample practice. And if numbers are truly your weak zone, you must pay a whole lot of attention to this section. After all, this is one of those sections in the test that can fetch you the maximum of correct answers, all with the help of some rigorous practice session. So just brush up your mathematical skills and get going!

Preparations for the UKCAT 2011 are in a full swing. Since the registrations for the exam have already begun, candidates are simply in no mood to waste an inch of time; instead are devoting their cent percent in the preparation method. It is quite obvious that they will delve themselves deep in the preparation as cracking the UKCAT is a dream that they have been harbouring for a long time. Candidates preparing to sit for the test are well aware of the fact that in order to get into a good medical school that is recognised by the Consortium of the UKCAT exam, all they need is a high percentile. Hence, they follow the daily routine of indulging in the UKCAT practise, which will ultimately lead them to their goal. However, candidates must take note of the fact that in their pursuit of their dreams they must not let their practice session make them feel exhausted.

It often happens that at the end of the day candidates are practically left with no energy due to the tremendous brain storming that they experience while are solving the UKCAT questions. This is practically nothing but an outcome of the common advice that they follow i.e. practise is the only way to meet your goal. True it is that there is no shortcut to success. However, at the same time it is also required to ensure that your practice should not leave you tired and fatigued. The main purpose for which you should avoid this is nothing but that excessive tiredness is often the main cause behind the unnecessary anxieties and nervousness. The fatigue may also result in your ill health. Therefore, every one of you who is thinking of sitting for the test should ensure that you maintain a balance in your practice. It is recommended that you take short breaks in between the practice session. Remember that practice will only be perfect when there is nothing else going around at the back of your mind that is likely to distract you. Hence, in order to keep yourself rejuvenated you must not let the practice session let yourself feel tired. The questions of this particular examination is such that while solving them you must have a fresh mind that will ensure that when you are finally done with the question paper it comes out error free.

Hard work is not just about practicing more and more. It also implies whether you are following the correct rules or not. No doubt with the UKCAT 2011 about to start in a couple of weeks, all candidates hopeful of cracking the test are putting in all their efforts for the test. As candidates leave out no stone unturned for the UKCAT preparation, gathering as many practice booklets as they can and practicing them well, it must also be ensured that while practicing those papers they follow the time limit that is ideally allotted to every section of the UKCAT. No matter how much engrossed students get with their UKCAT test practice, they must never forget that the test is after all an online examination. This means that time is an extremely crucial factor. Call it a disadvantage if you want to but the truth remains that you cannot waste too much time on any particular question. An online test certainly does not permit you to do that. Hence, you must keep your senses alert in taking of the fact that you do not waste too much time on one particular question. If you cannot reach to the answer to a particular question, do not ponder over it. Instead move over to the next question.

It often happens that students take the practice booklets on a light note. Never commit the grave mistake of taking them casually. It is recommended that while solving the practice papers do it exactly in the same way as you would do in the actual examination. This is perhaps the best way for getting adapted to the test mode. Getting habituated with solving these tricky UKCAT sample questions within the scheduled time limit will undoubtedly bring its advantages. As they say fruits of labour are always sweet to taste. No matter even the name stands as a mock test, candidates must never take it casually. They are nonetheless your key to success. Strictly adhering by the time limit will not just make you feel the essence of the test but will also sharpen your skills and abilities. Remember, this examination is not only restricted to the testing about knowledge in the subjects but is equally about testing the aptitude skill of the future medical practitioner.

As candidates hopeful of cracking the UKCAT 2011 engage in registering themselves for the test there also arises the nervousness which brings along with it a bundle of queries. It is to be noted that most of these queries are related to the UKCAT preparation itself. Questions such as which is the best time to sit for the UKCAT, how to move on with the preparations, or queries related to the types of questions are some of the common queries. Accordingly, there are ample of suggestions and tips for the test. One basic thing that automatically comes to the discussion is what is the best time for practising the UKCAT questions.

Practically there is no such ‘ideal’ time for students when they should indulge in the practice. Most of us think that in order to gain an entry into 26 of the 31 top universities of the nation, a never ending session of practice would prove to be beneficial. Students live under the grave misconception that in order to score high in the UKCAT exam, they must turn themselves into a book worm keeping all other activities aside. If you are one who too has been harbouring this idea, it is high time that you come out of the shackles of this very misconception. Just like there is no ideal time as such, it has to be ensured that the questions of this unique examination should only be practiced when your mind is fresh and calm. With this come the suggestion that one should try and sit with the practice in the morning itself. For that you have to ensure that you do not indulge in late night studies. This will not just overstress your brain but will also make you prone to illness.

Therefore, it is advisable that you wake up early. As you take a sip of your favourite tea or coffee sit down with the questions. These questions are designed in such a way understanding their pattern and solving them is not at all easy when your mind is not fresh. Take short breaks in the middle of the practice session as it will help in getting your mind rejuvenated.

There is ample information available on the Internet regarding the sample questions. Last but not the least, experts opine that a candidate while solving a sample question paper should take into consideration the same factors that he would do while solving the actual UKCAT exam paper. Hence, you should try and solve it keeping in mind every minute factor required for cracking the test.

The registrations for the UKCAT 2011 have already started taking place from the last month itself with thousands of students enrolling themselves for it. The moment one gets to know that there are endless numbers of registration applications pouring in, it often tends to scare the candidate away. The thing that makes one afraid is that how will he/she survive in the competition with so many competitors? If you are one of them who has a tendency to panic then you must follow a few simple tips that will help you in remaining calm before the final UKCAT exam. These will not just help to remain calm but will also assist you in remaining focused.

Practice as we all know will form a vital part of your daily routine until you are finally done with the examination. However, amidst studies you should take note of the fact that some considerable amount of time should be devoted in keeping the mind fresh. It is the time when you can engage in some recreational activities. Take some time out and engage in some good conversation with your family, where the topic of the exam should not be discussed. Go for an evening walk. Relishing a scoop of your favourite sundae in the local ice-cream parlour with friends is not at all bad. Spending some time in the swimming pool is an excellent idea. It will not just keep you physically fit but also help in rejuvenating your mind. You can also engage in a sport that you simply love to play.

There is simply no point is stressing the brain when you feel that it is tired of the UKCAT questions and reasoning and can take no more. Take a short nap. While in the company of friends who too are appearing for the UKCAT test, make sure that you do not spend the entire time in discussing things related to the test. However, you must also keep your senses alert as to what they are doing for the test. Avoid late night studies. Lack of sleeplessness will prove harmful. However, you must not forget that you will have to strike a balance between all these. The best thing that one can do to strike a proper balance is to chalk out a routine. Divide your timings and then schedule your activities accordingly. These simple UKCAT tips might appear to be the simplest piece of advice nonetheless important. However, the examination pressure often makes candidates forget these simple things.

It often happens that students are scared of the UKCAT questions. Are you one of them? Students aspiring to sit for the UKCAT exam are often scared by the pattern of the question paper. What is it exactly that tends to scare them away? Is it the type of questions, the length of the paper or the time factor? In most of the cases, it has been noticed that candidates feel that the UKCAT questions are too tough for them. If you feel the same, then you must remember one basic thing, i.e. the questions are actually tricky and not scary. Do not forget that this unique examination actually tests the aptitude level of the future medical practitioner. Only knowledge is not sufficient to crack this particular exam. If you want to achieve the high UKCAT scores so that you can get into a good university, it is high time that you understand that the questions are designed in such a unique way that will test your aptitude level.

The first thing that a candidate must do in order to shun the fear of the examination is to delve deep into the questions. It is essential for the candidate to get an essence of the types of questions that the exam sets for the students. The more you make yourself accustomed with the questions, the faster will you be able to get rid of the unnecessary fear and tension. Indulge into more and more of practice. As they say, there is no shortcut to success. If you work hard, nothing can stop you from attaining success. Hard work is bound to reap its sweet fruits of labour. While reading the questions, read them carefully. Observe the options minutely. One important thing that each and every candidate needs to follow is that while doing all of it, your mind should be calm. Do not let anxiety grip your mind.

Therefore, in order to indulge into more of UKCAT practise, get yourself as many UKCAT practice papers as you can. Practising them is a must as they are framed by experts who are experienced with the pattern of the exam. Try and solve them in the same way as you will be required to do in the final exam. You will realise that the options are tricky, not impossible to solve.
